Call for submissions to UN working group on deinstitutionalization

On behalf of the United States International Council on Disabilities (USICD) and Disability Rights International (DRI), we are writing to let you know about a regional “consultation” being organized by the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD Committee) to solicit input from people with disabilities and their allies on experiences and concerns related to the issue of deinstitutionalization.

On April 30, 2019, the European Network on Independent Living and Disability Rights International held a webinar on ‘Family and Community Integration of Children under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD): Implications for Group Homes and Residential Care of New Human Rights Standards and Findings from Research’.

DRI wins case to end torture

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has issued an immediate ban on the shock treatment used on children and adults with disabilities at a school in Massachusetts.   

In November, DRI filed a petition against the United States before the IACHR to demand that the United States impose a federal ban on this practice and end the use of shocks on all residents at the school.
